(I hope this doesn't make too many Americans weep with envy. I once looked into getting a job with Google in Silicon Valley and decided not to even apply when I saw the ridiculously meager American holiday allowance. As a European, it's hard to understand that whole mindset.)
Now we're not sure what to do next. The options on the table are
- trying to find a cheap last-minute holiday
- tidying and decorating the house.
We've lived in this house for four years now, and we've still only got one coat of paint on the kitchen, and on the rear window in the living room we managed to get one curtain up, and the other still needs to be made. It's been like that for three years. It's now got to the point where we both want to do something about this. We could probably also put up a picture or two.
The problem was we got the house to the stage where it looks cozy and lived in, and a good place to live, really, just not entirely finished. Who goes around counting the curtains in a house anyway?
It would just be so dull, and take so much energy. (Did you hear me whine there?) And going on holiday would be a lot more fun. But we have just been away for a week.
What do you think, internet? What would you do?
I'm not one for decorating, but I can appreciate the subtle touches that make the house feel more like home.
ReplyDeleteThen again, rock posters don't fit into everyones decor.
I LOVE decorating almost as much as I love going on vacation, so it would be a very tough call for me. I might try to do some of both. 4 days away with easy jet vacations, and the rest of the time decorating. And try to act like you're on vacation at home - do things you don't normally do...that's always fun too!
ReplyDeleteholiday!!! and pay some trustworthy young person to complete the list of tasks you leave behind....
ReplyDelete"trustworthy young person"...why do sound more and more like my own grandmother??????
Holiday! Life far to short to worry about decorating. Its not like those to do jobs are going anywhere. They'll still be there when you get home.
ReplyDelete@Badass Geek - Rock posters. Yes. I'll consider that.
ReplyDelete@Christy - I think we will end up doing that. We're packing the kids off to the grandparents' for a bit, too.
@Screamish - Yes, sure, I'm going to let some young person loose in my house. I think your grandmother is a bit naive? :-) Perhaps we should go on holiday. It would be less effort.
@Countess - Welcome! And I will keep your advice in mind.
It's hard to say without knowing how much needs to be done at your place vs. how long of vacation time you have. Maybe take a short (week or less) mini-break, and spend the rest of the time fixing it up to get it finished. there really is something to be said for having a nice, finished place. I should know, we have been working on our place (all vacation time) for almost three years now and I would do anything to have it done!
ReplyDeleteHoliday!
ReplyDeleteOoooo... I love to travel, I love to prettify my nest... Can you afford to do both in one year? I'd alternate! (But if you don't like redecorating, yet really feel it's necessary, you'd probably be wise to do that one in the first holiday time. Says me, the boring old ant.) :)
ReplyDelete@Megan - We've decided to start at least. We threw out lots of stuff today and put even more in the attic. Then we'll see how it goes. We might do day trips in between.
ReplyDelete@A Modern Mother - Yeah, it's a shame Babes has a vote, too.
@MaryP - I think you overestimate what we are planning on doing. We bought the material for the curtains a few years ago, so that won't cost us anything. We also still have the paint (I think). And we have some pictures lying around that we were given. It's more a case of getting lots of stuff off to Oxfam and actually getting the stuff done. We're planning on maybe buying some thread (is that the word? yarn?) for the sewing machine. That's it.
