This is a process. And not an easy one. You HAVE to use the poison shampoo. You HAVE to get all the nits (the eggs which are sort of glued to the hair shaft) off the roots of the hair. This means you have to visually inspect EVERY HAIR ON YOUR CHILD'S HEAD. I know, I know- impossible. But you do your best. As I said, you have to wash and dry everything that your child's head has touched. And now your head. And yes, everyone in your family is going to get this. Sigh. There were times I thought I'd just shave us all bald and then burn the house down. I really hate to tell you all of this, but this is the truth. And it must all be repeated in a few weeks time of all of your work will go for naught. Some people say that using olive oil on the hair works well. It suffocates the little buggers. Me? I don't know.
Oh that sucks big time. Don't forget to do bedding, stuffed toys etc as well as combing the hair. We've been through it MULTIPLE times thanks to a friend and her kids who continually brought it over. It's horrible and at the time I wished I had two boys instead of just one so I could have just shaved everyone's heads.
If it ever makes an appearance in our house again, I will for sure be shaving my head and the two boys...but will take pity on daughter.
Haha poor you (notice the sympathetic haha! sorry...it was the inner monkey comment made me laugh) I'm not looking forward to our first infestation (but given the fact Kai has virtually no hair think I have a while to wait thankfully)
Just don't get the Chardoney and the Lice Shampoo mixed up, that could end up in disaster...
Poor you. We have managed the whole school thing without nits but have poor friends who fought this battle constantly. But honestly not the end of the world.Maybe a chance to buy a new scarf or hat?
@cartside - I know what you mean. I'm still itchy, but I'm sure they're gone.
@Ms. Moon - Yeah, it's a process. We have two products to get the stuff off. So far, they seem to have worked. We're repeating the day after tomorrow. I have to say, combing out my own hair with that comb was not so much fun. I just decided to grow my hair long, and I could just feel it breaking. I suppose I could still go bald as you suggested.
@Mad woman - Thank you. Of course, only the girls got it. Figures.
@Lady mama - Thank you, so do I.
@Josie - I won't. Louse shampoo on the left, Chardonnay on the right. Got it.
@JennyMac - Thanks.
@Countess - Yeah, we're on top of it now, I hope. Some people are just more susceptible, I suppose. I never was, but then I never cuddled anyone. Now I do, and I got them.
The medicated stuff burnt my oldest neck so bad...she actually had burns from it! I drenched their heads in olive oil, wrapped their heads in plastic wrap and they stayed like that for hours and hours. Then I rinsed their hair, picked out all the nits (my kids never had any bugs, just the eggs for some strange reason) and did it all again just to be safe. After I did it the second time I could find no more eggs, then I shampooed them, rinsed them, checked them again and voila! that was it for us. I still have four kits of the medicated stuff in my cupboard. I wonder if I can sell it on Craigs List!?
@erin - The stuff I got actually said it had various oils in it, and works by suffocating the lice. You have to leave it in for 45 minutes, then rinse. It says it's all natural. I then have another thing which is acidy, which loosens the eggs from the hair before combing.
If these things don't work, I would consider using the medicated stuff, but hopefully it won't be necessary. Thanks for the warning, though. If we do use it, I will watch out for that.
I'm a teacher on a break until done procreating. Moved about the UK for a good few years, now back living in Belgium with Scottish man and three kids. The children speak Dutch to me and English to their father. Sometimes we get lost in translation.
I love me some comments, so feel free to let me know what you're thinking.
