I think the world is stupid when it comes to Bono. That's right, people. My opinion. Out there. Take it or leave it.
As I see it, most of the people I know have two opinions when it comes to Bono. Here they are:
- He's a musical genius and should be revered.
- He thinks he's Jesus and should be ridiculed.
The correct opinions are:
- How the fuck does he get people to like his music? He whines. "One, one, ooooone." Whatever, dude.
- He uses his money, time and influence for the very best causes and genuinely tries to make this world a better place. Very funny. Ehm, no. Very cool, in fact.

Everyone to their own, I say. I used to like U2 20-odd years ago, but I haven't intentionally listened to anything by them for years now.
ReplyDeleteNo-win situation for the obscenely rich - if they don't use their fame and fortune for the good of humanity, everyone points an accusing finger. If they do, everyone dismisses them as playing god. WTF?
Even so, my heart doesn't bleed for them - I suppose they have their compensations.
I always change the radio station when U2 comes on. Bono isn't all he's made up to be.
ReplyDeleteOh my. I SO agree with you. I never got the whole U2 thing. I thought it was just me.
ReplyDeleteBut he does good work, doesn't he?
Nice post.
Am totally with you on this. Have never bought anythign by U2, never enjoyed listening to their music, but yes, he's passionate about lots of things and lots of important things too. But please - those sunglasses? No...
ReplyDeleteI'm not a U2 fan either.
ReplyDeleteExcept for that one song he wrote for his wife when he forgot her birthday.
Don't know the name...just saw the info on pop up video once.
I used to be a big U2 fan, back in the good old days (what good old days? they were rubbish). I admit that I like his voice (turns red) and agree on no 2 with you. He does use his influence to the best of his abilities. I'm cool with that. And it doesn't affect how I like or don't like his, ehm, U2's music to be honest.
ReplyDeleteHowever, why oh why does he wear sunglasses all the time? I once walked right past him (my claim to fame?) and it was pitchdark. He still had his glasses on. How he didn't trip I don't know.
I remember reading something about Bono flying a hat halfway around the world - in first class. Probably not true but make me want to completely ignore his ravings about how we should all live our lives. Him and Chris Martin, it's alright you telling us how to eat, shop, travel, plant more trees etc, you're not skint!
ReplyDeleteOh and U2 have done nothing of note musically since Rattle & Hum, and they make me cringe when you see them dressed in black leather and sunglasses - stop it now!
I've been in love with Bono since I was 11. I happen to love his voice. I agree with the above commenter and haven't liked much since Rattle & Hum. I'm not sure I'm in love with this current version of Bono but he'll always have a place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteHe is lovely. And he can sing to me any time.
I love U2. And I like Bono's voice. As for him - worshiping him or whatever, um no.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the sunglasses comments!!
ReplyDeleteIs there a third option
ReplyDelete3. Don't care about Bono!
I hate his music as well!! But love the rest. Even tho I never had the love of him growingup (umm, lets just say I'm from the era of New Kids).
ReplyDeleteI like U2. But oddly enough, I don't think I own any of their CDs. So I guess I only like them in small, occasional amounts ;-)
ReplyDeleteBeen years since they were worth listening to.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for Bono and his good work, but does he have to be so bloody rock n'roll while he does it.
Lose the shades, leather jacket and peace sign.
I'm afraid i'm in camp 2 but he does get extra points for all the "nice" things he does i suppose, it's just a shame he's sooo annoying!
ReplyDelete@all - Okay, for those who like the music: I'm not arguing taste. Enjoy. Just not with me.
ReplyDeleteFor those who don't like the shades or rock 'n' roll - I'm fine with those. Think it's kind of nice he wants to dress the way that makes him happy.
For those who don't like to be told what to do - I agree with what he's saying, so I don't mind. I think he's just raising consciousness.
That's all, folks. Thank you for leaving a comment!
I'll admit it, I'm a big ole loser because I started loving U2 when I was about 12....and that was way more than 12 years ago.....I love Bono
ReplyDelete"Bono, you're lovely. Just don't sing." Made me laugh out loud and break into chuckles at random times for quite a while thereafter. Not that I agree with you -- I quite like U2. But your comic timing? Perfect. Heeheeheeheeheeheehee
ReplyDeleteBono tortured me while in labor with my second child. The tv was on. U2's video for Vertigo was number one. It played incessantly. Why didn't anyone turn it off? I don't know. MY brain was pregnant and I was being induced. What can I say?
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm going to see U2 in concert in just over a week's time, so I will get back to you on this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm your opposite - or maybe I complement you :) He can sing all he wants but when he opens his mouth to save the world/africa/G8/crippling international debt I just want to tell him to shut the fuck up and get his head out of his arse - he is SO up himself.
ReplyDeleteI once walked out of a Simple Minds gig (this was a serious move I tell you) cos I was sick to the bottom of my cider & blackcurrant filled pit with Jim Kerr shoving images of starving children at me when I was there to blow-out and dance.
There's a time and place for politics and activism and its usually when I've had 2 bottles of wine and feel like a punch up thankee muchly (Fridays in my kitchen after school - stick it in your diary), not when I want to boogie to "Glittering Prize". I'd happily hack my ears off with a rusty pizza cutter than listen to "Mandela Day" again. Ever.
HI! Nice to "meet" you :)
