Fight or flight

There's a feeling I get in times of extreme emotion. It's a very physical event. My breathing stops, and my whole body freezes. I get a tingling in all my extremities. In fact, it's more than a tingling. It's like an electrical current goes through all of my fingers and all of my toes. And the top of my head. I've had this feeling quite a few times this month. Generally I get it in situations of fear:
  • When I nearly careened into a car in front of me which had to brake suddenly for another car.
  • About two minutes after taking this picture

when Marie tumbled head-over-feet down five of those steps. (She was fine.)
  • When Jack wasn't in the line of children coming out of his school. (Silly misunderstanding, quickly cleared up.)
Sometimes it is prompted by embarrassment:
  • When I realised I was starting to tell a story I wasn't meant to be telling. (I stopped in time. Yay!)
And then sometimes it's pure lust:
  • That scene in the tent in Brokeback Mountain. On a big screen. Oh boy. And oh boy. Yes, oh both boys. That must be a serious contender for sexiest ever scene in movie history.

I guess I'm a bit tense these days. On tenterhooks. Highly sensitive. Whatever. My fight or flight response is too quick to appear. I need to remember to breathe, take a minute, be in the now. I'm just not sure where to start. Here, and now, I suppose.

  1. I hate that heart in your mouth feeling and I get the tingly fingers thing too.

I think when you're a parent it gets worse as you are suddenly primed to respond to everything faster.

I hope you can tame it a little.

    :)

  2. Oooooh, this post makes me want to watch Brokeback Mountain. So much better than a tumble down the stairs.
    How is Marie? Better?

  3. I get something similar - very shaky and then sounds kind of go a bit muffled and vision cloudy. It makes me want to hide away - which is what I usually do.

You are tired my sweet. That's why your senses are on such hyper-alert.

It will pass. Hope Marie is better really, really soon xxxx

  4. I get like that around the same time everyday. Right after the two older kids get home from school...when I'm preparing dinner and everyone wants something from me and there's homework to be done.

Ugh! Just thinking about it makes me tense!

  6. @Insomniac Mummy - Yeah, the kids are the source of about half of them these days. They seem to hurt themselves all the time.

@May - Oh, you should watch it. (Again, I suppose?) It's glorious. Happy, sad, sexy, awful. I don't normally stare at my own blog all day, but today I can't help it with that picture on it. ;-)
Marie's much better but she's running a temperature again today. She just has to sit it out, I guess.

@Josie - Tired sounds about right. :-) And I love to hide as well.

@erin - That is the most stressful part of the day. It's going on over here. I'm just taking five minutes out.

@Badass Geek - I take it it's one of your old friends, too.

  7. Anxiety can pop up for good or bad situations. Yes. Just keep breathing. One breath. Another. And so on.

  9. I go through this sometimes too - usually when I'm over tired which in turn makes me overly sensitive.

  10. I know it all too well. I'd offer suggestions but I have none. My anxiety rules my world.

  13. @Ms. Moon - *breathes*

@Cape Cod Gal - What's not to like? I think you and me could be BFF - if only we lived closer.

@Lady Mama - I have been a tad exhausted. Shall work on the sleeping.

@Erin - Mine used to as well. It'd better not win this time. I'm itching for a fight.

    @Kori - Thank you. And yeah - best.scene.ever.

    @Aunt Becky - xxx

Seriously, I could watch that scene (and other gay porn scenes) regularly!

Anxiety sucks eh? I feel for you!

  15. I have had that feeling, you are not alone. Its a sort of 'horrific' reaction I suppose. Or nerves, or panic. It's a reaction to a sudden 'worry' situation and as a mother I have suffered from feeling it on far too many occasions during my childrens lifetime.
When they have suddenly dissappeared, gone walkies etc.

  16. Guy porn? Again? Do I need to start worrying?
