Alcohol and sugar, sugar and alcohol

  • I'm stuck in the house (actually, pigsty) with one sick girl and one boy probably sick by tomorrow, and all I can think is "I would kill for a gin and tonic." I'm thinking it so much I am getting a headache. Or that could be because of the shouty children's TV. (Judge all you want. We had fruit!)
So, this gin and tonic... I can probably have it in about a year's time. Yeah, that should help with the headache. Actually, when I was pregnant with Marie I had a big gulp of someone else's the night before I gave birth to her. It was so good I still remember the sensation.
  • In the absence of my beloved G&T, or Chardonnay, or a good old beer, I have Snickers. Not as good, I know, but it will have to do for the time being. Now I have a most existential question when it comes to Snickers: how come the big ones are delicious, and the small ones taste slightly burned? There must be some flaw in the Snicker-condensing-formula they use to make the teeny ones, but they're just not the same. Maybe it's something to do with the relative size of nut vs. outer chocolate casing. It may work better for the bigger casing.
While I'm on this topic, I also have a complaint about Maltesers. It's a similar but much more nonsensical problem. The Maltesers in the big pack are delicious. The ones in the small pack? Not so much. But the bloody things are the same size! So no Malteser-condensing-formula can be ruining my pleasure. Maybe they make the small packs in a different factory. They should get their acts together, these Malteser folks.
  • As you can tell, my sugar addiction is back with a vengeance. I had pretty much weaned myself off that addictive substance, but then I hit morning sickness, and what is a girl to do? I can't drink anything just now, apart from sparkling water and Pepsi! I've only had three glasses of the devil's liquid in total in the last couple of weeks, and still I sit here thinking I might go out and buy some. (I won't.)
  • I'm just one big chunk of longing today. (Not only for food and drink.)

  1. OMG. My last pregnancy was insane. Cake Cake Cake. Icecream. I actually sat on the sofa with a whole swiss roll in my two hands. The voice that usually tells me to back away slowly from the ben and jerry's was saying 'Get it, get it now. Get two.'

Sugar in my urine... thrushthrushthrush... but at least at 6/7 months the craving went away completely and I never put on any more weight. The bump grew but I must have been losing!

    God, it was bad though.

    Mojitos was what I wanted.
And as soon as was pregnant, they seemed to appear everywhere.

  2. do they make you do that test where you have to drink ultra hyper super concentrated glucose and see what happens to your blood sugar? i did the two full ones when i was pregnant and it cured me of sugar for a year...

  3. Nah, I shrugged it off without a bother :)

  4. Never did the sugar thing......but olives and blue vein cheese and pickles.
Hope your munchkins get better and fast!

  5. I agree completely about the little Snickers! I've never heard of Maltesers.

    And longing sucks.

  6. G&T is my drink of choice every time. Especially Bombay Saphire. We have a bottle of gin that somebody left at our house from Sainsburys - Brrr not good!! Sorry to rub it in !!

We LOVE Malteasers in our house too. Any packet size will do, but the bigger the better. And LOVE the Maltesers Teasers in the Celebration boxes. I try to get every single one before anyone gets a look in. Not that I'm greedy or selfish or anything like that!

  7. They want to make you into a martyr as soon as you're pregnant. Apparently this year you're not allowed to drink any alcohol. Last I remember was that one glass of wine A DAY was fine.

I craved fried egg with runny yolk. And I ate it. Bad me ;)

  8. Sugar was the last thing I wanted. I lived on popcorn and hot dogs. It was disgusting.

  9. Don't ask me these questions. I still think that kitchen water is far superior to bathroom water. But with candy, yes, there is that proportion size. When the screw with it, the flavors don't work right together.

  10. I love your candy thoughts. I don't know what Maltesers are either, but that makes sense about the different factories. Craziness. And you're right about the Snickers!
I love your "We had fruit!"
I want alcohol now, even though I barely drink. I feel like I should have some for you.
I love your writing, you're so funny and lovable.

  11. My best friend ate nothing but chocolate oranges for the first twelve weeks of her pregnancy and I swear you could have made candy canes from her crystalised wee.

Your bump picture (which I have just seen) is gorgeous. As are you x

  12. You are so right about the Snickers and Maltesers! So funny. During my pgs I HAD to eat bowls of bolognese sauce several times a week. It was the only savoury food group I could eat for some reason - and a welcome distraction from all the chocolate and Coke baby seemed to be craving.

I'm a chunk of longing too. But for completely different reasons obviously. xx

  13. @Jo - My first pregnancy it was Coke and eclairs, the last one it was pink yoghurts. And I miss my G&T.

@screamish - They do do that one, and I don't see why because I've never had a problem with my sugar. It's disgusting.

@Countess - Blue cheese? You are gross. And I thought that wasn't allowed any more just now... Phew for me!

@Stephanie - I have been told by Wikipedia that Maltesers are similar to Hershey's Whoppers. Malted milk balls covered in chocolate. Yumm!

@Victoria - I'm a Gordon's and Schweppes girl myself. Mmmm. Yes, you did rub it in.

@cartside - I know one glass would be okay, but I'd rather have none than one, because that's just a teaser. I always like the second one best. ;-)

@Mad Woman - Savoury popcorn is disgusting indeed. :-) That stuff needs sugar!

@Ms. Moon - Our bathroom water tastes off as well. So glad it's not just our house.

    @Bethany - See @Stephanie on the Maltesers.
    And thank you so much!

@Josie - Yeah, the pee could be interesting. I did go through a Jaffa Cake phase a few weeks back, but overdid it one morning, and they get less appealing after you've seen them come out the top hole again.

@Nicola - I'm off tomato sauce just now. Too sour for some reason. It seems everyone has their crazy cravings. It's probably what the baby needs most.
Good luck with the longing. xx

  14. Bathroom water is not for drinking! It's been sitting round in copper pipes all day absorbing heavy metals. Don't drink bathroom water...

  15. It's sad when you can't drink...I was counting down the days when I was pregnant!

  16. @Jo - That must be it. Babes still insists on giving it to the children at night.

@Kate - But then I'm planning to breastfeed for ages as well!

  17. Funny, I would never touch maltesers normally but they taste so good out of a box!! Weird. ;0)

  18. Never had any cravings while I was pregnant, but I sure ate for two. Here I had a chance to gorge on food and I was not about to pass it up. I did gain almost half my body weight.
By the way, I'm fairly new here, yet I did notice that you are not shy. So, what else exactly are you craving?

  19. You and Ms. Moon are right, kitchen water is definitely better.

I ate my way through my last pregnancy devouring boxes of mango sorbet popsicles, which are now unavailable. It made the post partum period so much harder to go without. I suggest you try some mango delicacies so you can get all that sugar you need and still feel somewhat virtuous.

  20. i know you will all hate me now..but i read a harvard paper about the fact that a glas of red wine during pregnancy once in a while dont harms the mother nor the baby...so..maybe no gin..but a glass of merlot??

  21. I was obsessed with those sugar coated peanuts they sell on the street when preggo with daughter. God only knows what crap, horse pubes etc was mixed in with it but I HAD to eat them!

I vote eat only Big Snickers. Little ones are for people who lie to themselves thinking they'll only eat one, but they're so small you eat 3 and then that's equivalent to more than one big one!! Right? Live it up!

  22. I had brandy when I was in early labour with my first. The advice of a very misguided midwife. It just made me feel awful, after alcohol-free 9 months.
