A tooth for every child

I went to see a dentist today. Bad mistake.

It had been a while, I will admit, but not that long.

The verdict:
  • one cavity
  • four fillings in need of replacement
  • one crown needed.
I'm still shaking. This will be a season of dentistry.

I thought breastfeeding would get me off the hook for a bit, but apparently it's "urgent" and "not a problem."

Feel free to commiserate. I'm feeling rather sorry for myself.

  1. Ack, ack. I'm in a similar, shitty, expensive boat. I'm consoling myself with the fac tthat they MUST be on the cusp of inventing regrowing teeth, and that even if I have to get dentures, it might not be for too long...

  2. I hear you. It had been 10 years since I visited the dentist due to a huge fear, but after coughing up the courage and nearly 2k, I'm just about done with dentistry.

  3. Do you pay for Dental care in Belgium? I mean, besides with taxes? It's always bad enough to have to get work done on your teeth and then to have to pay thousands of dollars...
    Well, it sucks.
    Sorry, babe.

  5. @Jo - Poor you as well! You should go off and invent those yourself. Then let me know.

    @littlewifetolittlemama - Welcome! And I'm glad to hear you're near the end of your ordeal. Mainly because that means you've survived it.

    @Ms. Moon - Well, I'll get back most of the money for the fillings, but the crown I will have to pay for - 690 euros. Or maybe 960. I was in red alert mode by the time she told me and to be honest I wouldn't trust myself with any information I received just then. It will be expensive, but I'm guessing not as expensive as it would be in the States...

    @acountrypumpkin - Welcome!
    Tell me about it. I only just had my teeth cleaned today and I was shaking afterwards and had to sit down for a bit.

  6. My dentist in London always said my teeth were fine, but since I've been in America, they've been finding all sorst of problems...funnily enough.

  8. erg. wish my dentist was a bit more rigourous though, every time I go there for a filling I find a new hole a couple of weeks later. perhaps he drills them secretly so i have to go back again..

  10. I feel your pain - I am down to five teeth that are not crowns or a bridge. I even had a gingavectomy last year, or whatever it is when they cut out diseased gums under a bridge. My new plan is to go see the implants guy and make a financial plan for not getting dentures over the next ten years, I reckon $15,000 or so should do it. Sure wish I'd flossed and brushed more as a child. But you need to jump on it Mwa, and be sure to ask for pain meds -the only benefit of dental work.

  12. Several years ago I was home in the USA where I was still (stupidly) going to the dentist at the time. He told me I had four cavities. I think I cried, not so much about the cavities, but about the price.

  13. I have to have 2 cavities filled on Tuesday, so I'm feeling your pain. The dentists love telling me how I should take better care of my teeth. There's a lot of things that I SHOULD do...but there's not enough time in the day.

  14. @nappy valley girl - I suppose they have different ideas about teeth over there. Do they try to convince you to have them whitened until they shine like the sun as well?

    @Metropolitan Mum & @Iota - Thank you!

    @screamish - I was wondering that - this one ran one of her machines randomly across my teeth, maybe accidentally. Wouldn't be surprised if I got some more holes.

    @Angie Muresan - They suck indeed. Once you get the feeling back in your mouth.

    @GingerB - Ouch - you have it worse than me! Now I'm sympathizing with you. That feels better. Thanks. ;-)

    @Bethany - Poor you! Better make an appointment soon, before it gets worse. Mine was brilliant about that: she said "it's very urgent. If you leave it one more day, it could get to the nerve and we might have to take it out." I was like "Okay, when can I have an appointment?" Answer: 10th of November. Gee, ta. I just hope it won't be too late then.
    Good luck with yours. Maybe if we get it done the same day we'll feel less alone.

    @Tanya - That must be awful! Luckily mere cavities don't cost too much over here, with our insurance.

    @Kate - I know. I brush okay, but flossing seems so much bother. I may have to start taking the time, though... Good luck tomorrow!

  15. i commiserate!
    i haven't been in a year and a half! partly due to not getting the 'free check and clean' any more because I chose to take a career break to look after my little girl, and partly because I keep putting it off... i really should go...
