Priorities

On Friday, I planned to take Charlie to the creche so I could go to the gym, have a long shower all by myself, have a nutricious lunch and have time left to do some laundry. This is not even really a luxury. I need my gym time just to be happy.

I started off very well: I took Jack and Marie to school, dropped Charlie off at his creche. Then I came home...

...went to bed and slept for four hours.

It was so worth it. It's just a shame I didn't get my happy exercise hormones. I'm slightly more rested now but I am a little fractious. It's a shame I have to choose.

Ah well. At least I finally got some sleep. Now I just have to make sure I don't make it a habit. Tomorrow, I must must must go to the gym instead of coming home for a repeat of Friday. I'm not taking any bets, though. Charlie's teething and has a cold so sleep is even more elusive than it already was.

Of course, a clever person would not be blogging with a gin and tonic at hand. A clever person would have drunk a healthy smoothie two hours ago and be counting sheep by now. A clever person would probably be going out for an early morning run before everyone even gets out of bed tomorrow. Oh don't you just hate that clever person?

Right - now I must go to sleep, partially because Babes is watching Top Gear within hearing distance and I loathe that programme with all its scriptedly spontaneous nitwitshit so I want to get out of this room.

*goes off muttering "Must must must go exercise, not sleep. Must must must go exercise, not sleep. Must must must..." *

  1. Your body needs sleep more than the exercise. Don't ever feel guilty for sleeping when you need it. And only idiots get out of bed before the family in February to go running. Get some rest and consider the 'exercise' you get just doing your daily routine. Today the laundry tomorrow the world! I'm only saying all this becuase I skipped 2 runs myself this weekend and I'm passing on my excuses!!!

  2. I don't know, I think your bod is telling you something. And besides, with three little kids you're hardly a couch potato!

  4. People who get enough sleep burn more calories than those who don't. You wouldn't want to waste all that exercise, would you?

  5. Funny how what we must do and what we actually do is nearly always the opposite. Ahh well, I don't like the 'nitwitshit' either, but I'm lucky no one watches it here :)

  6. My thoughts exactly...cleverly written...
I've thought dozens of times, I should get up before daybreak and run, because that's what a productive person would do.
I've been there and still am there with the lack of sleep thing...colds and teething are my worst enemy...

  7. Listen to your body. If it's telling you that sleep is a more urgent need than exercise, who are you to disagree? And if it's telling you not to be in the same room as Top Gear, then listen to that too!

I loved "scriptedly spontaneous nitwitshit". Love it.

  9. Sometimes having kids feels so much like we have to put on hold the things we want to do while we fit in the things we need to do.

This year I am scheduling in some 'wants' and more frivolous things. And now I've discovered the joys of babysitters, there's no stopping me!

  10. I'm with everyone else on this--get your sleep before the exercise! Yes, I agree, exercise gives me the happy buzz too, but if I'm too tired I don;t exercise as effectively as I should then I just get cross not happy.

And MAJOR ditto on Top Gear!!!

  13. If it makes you feel better - I missed my (prepaid) Pilates class the other week and swapped it against a morning on the sofa with tea, woollen blanket and biscuits.

  14. I'm sure nobody has said this before: Sleep is always the winner. Sleep is goooood. Sleep is loooovely. Sleep is deviiiine.
Jesus would be proud of you for sleeping.
Running after kids is exercise enough anyway.

  16. Oh, fuck "the musts." Do what you can. Do what your body tells you. It's going to be different soon and that boy will sleep better and so will you and life will be entirely different.

  17. Oh boy...life is far too short to be clever...

  18. Oooo I was so jealous to read about those 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep! Soooo jealous! So many nights here with kiddos coughing, Huzz snoring, getting up to administer cough medicine and give cuddles every few hours - sleep deprivation is the worst isn't it.

And I hate Top Gear too!

  19. A clever girl would realize that sleepless nights burn a ton of calories. Sleep. You have a lifetime ahead of you to get to the gym.

  21. Sleep sleep sleep! If you had the chance, take it! There will be plenty more times for the happy exercise hormones. Totally with you on Top Gear as well.

  23. Hate having to choose between exercise and sleep... and I would so like to be one of those people who get up early and run but I really am not one of them

  25. Hey! you are a third time mommy. That means you are running behind three super-charged little human beings, why do you need to workout?

You can probably get free baby-sitters by offering aerobicsvclasses that consist of people running after you kids!
